unless

I am supposed to be packing for a trip to leave in 2 hours and I have a long list of all the things I need to do. I am writing a blog entry instead. Because some things are more important than getting ready. Like sharing this scripture:

"Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain. It is in vain that you rise early and go late to rest, eating the bread of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep."

-Psalm 127:1, 2

anxious toil. If my headstone were to have one bad thing written on it, this would be it. How many hours of my life have been wasted on anxious toil? How many opportunities for rest have I missed because I just wanted to get "one more thing done"? Too many to count.

I'm reminded this morning of my small-ness. That no matter how hard I work, God is bigger and it's not all up to me. Even more importantly, when I live and act like it's all up to me, all of it is in vain. That is sobering. and wonderful.
