Enough

A few days ago while we were on a walk with Beckham, he found and picked up these three rocks.  "One for you, Dada, one for you, Mama, and one for me."  He handed each of us our rocks and I shared my appreciation for this sweet gift and tucked mine into my jeans pocket.  Beckham decided he didn't want to carry the others anymore, so my one rock turned into three and we made our way home.  Once inside, I dropped them onto the shelf with everything else in my arms and didn't think much about them.  Later that day, as I was clearing off the counter, there they were again.  These three rocks.  One for me, one for John, and one for Beckham.   




For most of the last year, "the three of us" has seemed painfully small.  I've longed for my pile of rocks to be bigger, to grow our family.  I still do.  But every time I look at these three, sitting on my planner, I'm reminded that three is substantial.  And for right now, three is enough.


I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.  I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want.
