Rediscovering a classic

Last week, I spent some time in Houston visiting my little Sister, Abi. She had never seen The Sound of Music, so we planned a "movie night pajama party" to watch it. I can't count how many times I have seen The Sound of Music, but I jumped at the chance to not only watch it again, but to see my little sister watch it for the first time. So, we got on our pajamas, popped the popcorn, she grabbed every stuff animal that she owned, and we settled in for the classic. Here we are, pre-movie.

Somewhere in my childhood, I was given the Sound of Music soundtrack. I didn't even remember this until we had begun the movie and I started singing every word to every song. Not just "Do, Re, Mi", mind you, but "I Have Confidence" and "EdelWeiss". Even "Climb Every Mountain"!!! I distinctly remember fast forwarding through that song every time it came on, but somehow every word is still lodged in my memory! I had to keep myself from busting off the couch and singing every word--WITH emotion! I didn't want to ruin the experience for Abi :), so i tried to keep my musical numbers to myself as much as possible.

We ended up watching the movie twice over the next few days because Abi liked it so much. How could she not?! After watching it through this time, years later, i was completely floored by what an amazing movie it is. If there is one movie out there that encompasses love, adventure, depth, meaning, tears, laughter, family, and inspiration--this is it!! If you don't share this love, just watch some of these poorly dubbed you tube videos and maybe you'll change your mind.

And for those that are as completely enthralled as I am, here is a video of the reunion of all the kids and Julie Andrews on Good Morning America, 40 years later. Leisl hasn't changed a bit :).

So, now for the real question. Who was/is your favorite Von Trapp child?

  1. LOVE Sound of Music!!! I did the tour in Salzburg and I even climbed up in the trees that the kids were jumping out of when their father was returning from Vienna. They wouldn't let us step up on the benches in the gazebo (from the 16 going on 17 song) because an American woman broke her leg doing it! The Sound of Music Broadway show is coming to Atlanta this fall and I can hardly wait! I used to want to name my child Gretl because of this movie. :)

  3. (teary eyed as I write!) What an absolutely wonderful reminder this morning---of so many dear, dear things---the movie itself and all its amazing draws (I was a junior in high school when it came out and so idealistic, as I should have been.), and add to that, enjoying it so much, later with my children. Now I want to watch it with my grandchildren!!! This was very sweet, Bri---thank you! Love, Mom

  4. Bri, I just watched this with Riley this weekend! I can't watch it without crying and singing all the way through. Such a beautiful picture of family and redemption. Thanks for the reminder!
