People are...

calling all writers, whether you think you are or not. Perhaps it's better if I say, "calling everyone who has something to say about something". That should pretty much cover it. I have had a project swimming in my head for a few weeks and am now finally putting some feet to the idea.

I was flipping through magazines and coming across all kinds of words, phrases, and pictures that caught my eye and made my brain wheels start spinning. I cut them out, not sure what I would end up doing with them. I've decided to write about these things, small or large, deep or shallow, funny or serious. Each image, word, or phrase evokes something in me. I have a feeling it will do the same for you. And when/if it does, I hope you will write about it here, either as a comment on facebook or the post itself. Because after all, if the internet is good for anything, its a great place to share ideas and thoughts.

...when I talked to "Lauren" from Blue Cross Blue Shield of TN the other day, i was not so sure that this was true. The conversation went something like this...

Me: Hi, Lauren. I have a few questions about my policy. I've called a few times previously and learned... (she cuts me off)

Lauren: (in a demeaning tone of voice)...yeah, I can see that from this record. You've been calling a lot. Obviously, you haven't gotten your questions answered, because you keep calling. Hopefully, I can finally get to the bottom of this.

Me: ooookkkkk, well I've learned about my insurance that I need to make an inter-plan transfer, but what I am not clear about is... (cuts me off again).

Lauren: Right, and what you need to do is this, this, this.... (insert insurance-ese words here). Did that answer your question?

Me: Actually, no. (since she never listened to the question in the first place).

Lauren: (fake laugh.) Then, I don't really understand why you are calling.

When I am in a really difficult place and talking to an insurance representative who seems to have no care whatsoever that I am in a tough spot, it's hard to believe that people are good. It's much easier to believe that people just care about themselves.

The very same day I had a conversation with some friends (husband and wife) of mine. Before John and I left their house for dinner, they said to us,

"We wanted to give you this money to go out on a date during your Charleston trip, but completely forgot. We'd still love to give it to you."

My response: speechless.

Why? Because my friends don't have extra money to throw around. Even if they did, it would still be a generous and kind gift. But because they don't, and wanted to give to us anyway, I was speechless. It could not have come at a more perfect time. I just smiled, feeling as if I had just been "kissed by God".

It's moments like these when I know, without a doubt, that people are good.

  1. I decided to make a poem with that phrase:

    People are good,
    people are bad,
sometimes insurance people make me mad,
    they are rude and demeaning
    and very unpleasing
oh, I wish they would all change their job.

  3. And, Bri, I am with you in all of this and praying for all circumstances that will lead to peace. Insurance companies work hard against this!

    I love you,

    Gail
